The U.S. Presidents Cup team was solidified when Brandt Snedeker made his six captain’s picks Tuesday evening.
The moment of truth revealed Chris Gotterup, Xander Schauffele, Jackson Koivun, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Jacob Bridgeman as the half dozen players who will be donning red, white and blue at Medinah Country Club later this month.
Snedeker had previously said he was picking from a pool of about 20 to 22 names, not an easy whittling down process.
Of the captain’s picks, the most notable surprises were the omissions of Ryan Gerard and Ben Griffin.
Griffin, who was inside the top 6 automatic spots for most of the year before being bumped out in the final qualifying event, is No. 23 in the Official World Golf Ranking — one spot below Gerard, who finished solo third at the Tour Championship on Sunday in Atlanta.
Also of interest is the exclusion of J.J. Spaun. The 2025 U.S. Open winner withdrew from East Lake during Thursday’s opening round citing a sore right shoulder.
The 21-year-old Koivun, who won in his third career start on Tour, is making his Presidents Cup debut alongside Gotterup and Bridgeman.
The American captain’s picks will join Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa, who made the team as automatic qualifiers.
The U.S. takes on the International Team at Medinah from Thursday, Sept. 24, through Sunday, Sept. 27, with NBC and Golf Channel hosting live TV coverage and Golf Channel mobile and Peacock streaming the event.
